Interview

1. Tell us a bit about your role on the team.

Even with podcasts being one of the bright spots in media and entertainment, the audio ad tech stack is still in its nascent stages compared to digital video and text-based media. The Sounder team has built a suite of cutting-edge tools to address this! My job is to evangelize our technology to podcast publishers and help them reach even greater heights with their incredible content.

I’m leading our enterprise business strategy and managing the entire partnership life cycle – everything from initial partner engagement to signing and executing deals. I’m also looking forward to building out our business development/partnerships function from the ground up.

2. Why did you choose to join Sounder?

It’s amazing to think about how the sheer volume of podcasts has exploded since Serial hit the zeitgeist in 2014. Yet, the listener experience hasn’t matured enough where podcast fans can easily discover or engage more deeply on the topics they care about. And we’re at a true inflection point where the podcast ad market is ripe for shifting far beyond the $1B-$2B TAM. On the publisher and advertiser side, there’s a huge opportunity to drive more efficient and scalable monetization.

Enter Sounder – I’ve been so impressed with its AI and ML-driven tech. Having spent much of my career in big media solving for monetization opportunities, I’m thrilled to bring Audio Data Cloud to publishers and platforms and help them unlock their revenue potential. I was also inspired by how passionate the Sounder team is, with incredible leadership from Kal and Dan. We’re building something truly transformative for the audio ecosystem and I can’t wait to dig in!

3. What podcasts are you streaming lately? Why do you like them?

Invest Like the Best: Patrick O’Shaughnessy is such a well-prepared interviewer and he has an impressive guest line-up of business luminaries. I always walk away with a nugget or two about how they scaled companies, managed growth and learned from mistakes. Plus I love his closing question “what’s the kindest thing anyone has done for you?”.

Feeling Asian: It’s hosted by two Asian-American comedians, Youngmi and Brian, and they have really raw conversations about how nuanced the Asian-American experience is. They’re entertaining and funny, yet thoughtful and introspective.

The Dave Chang Show: I love food and they get interesting chefs on the show. It’s a smorgasbord of topics (no pun intended!) – Dave is hilarious and super opinionated, and his co-host Chris is the perfect complement.

4. What’s an interesting fact about you most people don’t know?

I took up running on a whim (having never done cross-country or track in school) and ended up training for the San Francisco Half Marathon which took me across the Golden Gate Bridge and back.

5. Who’s a podcaster or thought leader you admire today? Why?

Brene Brown – I love what she says about vulnerability.  You can’t achieve big things without getting out of your comfort zone!

6. What career accomplishment are you most proud of?

I launched a brand-new ad product within a few months of starting a new role and, in partnership with a talented sales team, scaled it to a multi-million dollar business. There’s nothing more exciting than diving straight into a new space, embracing the learning curve and building something tangible.

7. What advice would you give to other women starting their journey in media and tech?

Stay curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Find your tribe because it’s infinitely more fun and rewarding when you’re surrounded by like-minded people. When people open doors for you, run as hard as you can through it – and do the same for those who come after you.

Fast Five

8. Go-to karaoke song?

“Like a Prayer”

9. What’s your favorite way to spend your free time?

Exploring restaurants in NYC and beyond, and because it’s all about balance, trying new fitness classes through Classpass!

10. What’s your favorite trip you’ve been on?

Tulum with my UCLA crew for my friend’s milestone birthday.

11. If you could have a superpower, which would you choose?

Time travel.

12. What’s something still on your bucket list?

Writing a book about my dad’s side of the family. My grandfather was a decorated general in the Chinese army and battled alongside the American and British troops in World War 2.

We’re excited to have Jocelyn join our leadership team, and grow the company with her added expertise!
